The Cavalier King Charles: Affectionate, Gentle, and Royally Charming

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels truly live up to their reputation as one of the most remarkable dog breeds in the world. Here’s why they continue to win hearts everywhere:

Affectionate Companions

Cavaliers are renowned for their gentle and loving nature. They thrive on human companionship, forming strong bonds with their families and children. Their affectionate disposition makes them ideal lap dogs and loyal members of any household.

Adaptable and Easygoing

Whether living in a small apartment or a large home, Cavaliers adapt beautifully to various living situations. They are generally easygoing and content as long as they are close to their loved ones.

Gentle with Everyone

Known for their sweet temperament, Cavaliers are excellent with children and other pets. They are rarely aggressive and enjoy being part of family activities, making them wonderful additions to diverse households.

Low Exercise Needs

While they enjoy walks and playtime, Cavaliers don't require extensive exercise. Daily strolls and indoor play are usually sufficient to keep them happy and healthy, making them suitable for owners with varying activity levels.

Expressive and Charming

With their soulful eyes and expressive faces, Cavaliers communicate a wide range of emotions. They are often described as having a "melting" look, easily charming their way into the hearts of everyone they meet.

The King Charles II connection

King Charles II (reigned 1661–1685) adored these little spaniels so much that they became synonymous with him. Historical accounts describe him as rarely seen without several spaniels at his heels, and he even issued a decree allowing them into any public building, including Parliament.

This is where the “King Charles Spaniel” name originates.

Breed colours and identity

The Cavalier retained the traditional spaniel colours:

  • Blenheim

  • Tricolour

  • Black & Tan

  • Ruby

These colours reflect the genetics of the original toy spaniels.

What makes the Cavalier unique today

The modern Cavalier is known for:

  • A gentle, affectionate temperament

  • A longer muzzle and flatter skull compared to the King Charles Spaniel

  • A strong connection to its royal and artistic heritage

  • A breed standard shaped by both history and deliberate restoration

Why black Cavaliers disappeared in the first place

Modern Cavaliers officially come in four colours: Blenheim, Tricolour, Ruby, and Black & Tan. Solid black is not recognised. Over the past century, this has shaped the gene pool in three ways:

  • Breeders stopped selecting for black coats, so the genes that could produce them became rare.

  • Show standards discouraged non standard colours, meaning any black puppies that did appear were not bred from.

  • The breed was rebuilt in the 1920s from a small number of dogs, which narrowed colour genetics even further.

As a result, the possibility of producing a true solid black Cavalier nearly vanished.

Why black Cavaliers are reappearing now

There are three main reasons some breeders are bringing them back:

1. Preserving historical diversity

Early toy spaniels,  the ancestors of Cavaliers, came in a wider range of colours, including darker and black based coats. Some breeders want to restore the colours seen in old paintings and early records, not just the four modern show colours.

Genetic health and diversity

A broader gene pool can support long term breed health. Some groups, such as CKCS United, advocate for reopening colour standards to reduce genetic bottlenecks and allow responsible breeding of non standard colours.

Companion focused breeding rather than show focused

Families choosing Cavaliers as pets care more about temperament and health than show eligibility. This gives breeders room to work with rare colours, including black, without pressure from traditional show standards.

What this means for today’s black Cavaliers

Because the colour is so rare, the few black Cavaliers that exist today come from:

  • Carefully selected lines where the recessive genetics still survive

  • Import programmes (like us here at Karadon Kennels) that locate and preserve these dogs

  • Breeders committed to ethical, health first practices, not colour only breeding

These dogs are not “new inventions” — they’re a revival of something the breed once carried but lost through selective pressure.

Why people are excited about BLACK cavaliers

Black Cavaliers appeal because they are:

  • Historically meaningful

  • Visually striking

  • Extremely rare

  • Still true Cavaliers in temperament and structure

For many families, owning one feels like owning a piece of the breed’s forgotten past.

Height and weight range

Most adult Cavaliers fall into:

  • Height: 30–33 cm at the withers

  • Weight: 6–8 kg

This places them at the larger end of the toy group, giving them that perfect balance of being small enough for indoor living but sturdy enough for families and children.

Zoey

Zoey lives happily in Mid-Canterbury, where her vibrant spirit shines brightly. She is the daughter of Brandy. This playful dog is incredibly energetic and agile, making her the perfect partner for a game of fetch. She loves going for walks but is always eager to get back home, her excitement palpable as she trots along. Zoey is also a water enthusiast, enjoying every moment spent swimming. She also enjoys sitting outside and feeling the wind through her ears. One of her endearing traits is her desire to be close to people; whether you're sitting on the couch or wandering around the house, she'll happily settle near you or even hop onto your lap if given the chance. Zoey's affectionate and lively nature makes her a beloved companion for anyone fortunate enough to cross her path!

Delilah

Delilah is the beloved daughter of Chloe and lives just up the road with our good friends. As a cherished family dog, she gets along beautifully with children and other pets, always bringing a gentle, joyful energy into any room she enters.

One of Delilah’s greatest delights is snuggling up for movie nights, where she happily soaks in the warmth, laughter, and love of her family. Her playful spirit shines during walks and games of fetch, where she tackles every challenge with enthusiasm and a wagging tail. She’s also a cheerful participant in dress‑ups, adding a spark of fun to any occasion.

And of course, Delilah’s look is as unforgettable as her personality. Her striking mohawk gives her a unique flair equal parts cool, quirky, and completely her. It suits her perfectly, making her stand out not just as a wonderful companion, but as a true original.

We feel incredibly lucky to have such a joyful, affectionate, and one‑of‑a‑kind friend in our lives.

Meet Sophie: Our Rare & Unique Black Cavalier

We are privileged to have imported a rare and unique black Caviller named Sophie. She resides with a good friend in the beautiful region of Otago. Sophie is a lively companion who enjoys her days at Kindy, where she plays and socialises with the children. She absolutely loves visiting the park and the beach, where she can chase after balls and soak up the sun. Affectionate and friendly, Sophie is sure to steal your heart. As the only breeder in the South Island to have black Cavillers, we take great pride in sharing this wonderful breed with the community. Imported from Australia, Sophie is expected to produce rare chocolate and black puppies.

Meet Phoebe: Our Affectionate Farm Companion

Phoebe is the sister of Sophie and has made a wonderful home with us on our North Otago farm. This affectionate dog has a unique way of showing her love, she adores curling up around our necks as we relax together. Imported from Australia, Phoebe is one of only two black Cavalier King Charles Spaniels known in the South Island, making her a unique dog we're eager to get litters from. Her litters are expected to produce chocolate and black puppies. With her playful spirit, she certainly brings joy and energy to our daily lives on the farm. Whether chasing after birds or snuggling up after a long day, Phoebe’s charm makes every moment with her unforgettable.

Meet Chloe – A Mother Like No Other

Chloe, the devoted mother of Delilah, embodies the true spirit of loving parenthood. Her affection for her puppies knows no bounds, she ensures each one receives the care, attention, and devotion they deserve. With unwavering dedication, Chloe goes above and beyond to provide for her little ones.

From feeding and protecting them to showering them with endless love, Chloe takes her role as a mother to heart. Watching the bond she shares with her pups is truly heartwarming, a beautiful reminder of the deep connection between a mother and her offspring.

While most dogs begin weaning their puppies at around 5–6 weeks, Chloe continues to feed and nurture her pups even at 8 weeks (and anyone else who’s interested!). She lovingly brings them her food, her treats, anything she has, she shares.

Chloe truly is one of a kind, my very special girl, and a shining example of how love and family create the happiest, healthiest puppies.

Buddy

Buddy is an absolute little heart stealer, with the sweetest angelic face and a cheeky sparkle in his eye. As a young boy he’s full of beans, he loves the outdoors, adores playtime, and is forever trying his luck chasing bees and birds (one day that may backfire on him!).
He’s a playful, affectionate purebred Ruby Cavalier, raised on a farmlet as part of a family and bred for loving companion and therapy homes. Buddy has the most beautiful temperament and a gentle, happy nature that truly reflects the kind of puppies we aim to raise with care, love, and the highest ethical standards.

Beau

Meet Beau, our gorgeous little gentleman and a shining example of everything we love about the Cavalier breed. Mighty, handsome, beautifully marked, right down to his sweet little “birthmark” we adore.

Beau has the most placid, laid back nature you could ever wish for.

Living happily with his owner in a busy motel, Beau greets every guest like an old friend. He’s incredibly social, gentle, and loving, happily soaking up pats from everyone who walks through the door. True to our focus on breeding for loving companions and therapy-quality temperaments, Beau’s friendly, trusting nature shows exactly what we aim for in every puppy we raise.

He’s a little heart stealer, and everyone who meets him falls in love.
